England 9 Scotland 3
1961 Wembley
ONE of the blackest days
in Scottish international
history. Jimmy Greaves,
Bobby Smith, Johnny
Haynes, Bryan Douglas
and Bobby Robson blew
Scotland away while the
hapless Frank Haffey took
the brunt of the blame and
his name became infamous
among the Tartan Army.
Scotland 0 England 5
1973 Hampden
This was supposed to be
the SF A's centenary match
for the Tartan Army to
enjoy another success over
the Auld Enemy. But Mick
Channon and Co weren't
too keen to follow the
script. A 2O-yard own goal
from Peter Lorimer set the
tone as Willie Ormond,
making his debut as boss,
looked on in horror.
England 5 Scotland 1
1975 Wembley
A nerve-ridden
Stewart Kennedy played
his last game for Scotland
as the English piled five
into his net. The Rangers
keeper was beaten twice in
the opening minutes by
Gerry Francis and Kevin
Beattie. Bruce Rioch got
Scotland's consolation
effort from the penalty
spot, but there was no way
back, with further goals
from Francis, Colin Bell
and David Johnson.
Scotland 1 Peru 3
1978 Cordoba
It all looked so good for
Ally MacLeod when Joe
Jordan scored the opener
to get the Argentina World
Cup off to a flyer. Don
Masson even contrived to
miss a penalty-kick before
the roof fell in on the Scots.
Teofilio Cubillas rifled
in two long-range efforts
past a startled Alan Rough
and Peru dominated the
second-half as the Scots
were completely outclassed
and outplayed.
Scotland 1 Iran 1
1978 Cordoba
Scotlans's Argentine
disaster continued with
this utterly lamentable
draw against the Iranians.
Incredibly, Iran even gifted
Scotland with an opening
goal when Eskandarian
put through his own goal.
But this was not a game
Scotland were destined to
win and they conceded a
leveller when Alan Rough
was beaten at his near post.
Scotland 0 Uruguay 0
1986 Neza
This was the game that
Scotland had to win to
get to the next phase of the
World Cup for the first
time. We're still waiting.
Uruguay had a player sent
off in the first minute
for a crunching tackle on
Gordon Strachan. But
Scotland couldn't make
their numerical advantage
count. Steve Nicol had the
chance of a lifetime to toe-
poke the ball home from
almost under the crossbar,
but, amazingly, he missed.
Scotland 0 Costa Rica 1
1990 Genoa
Scotland went into
this encounter confident
of picking up three points
to get their World Cup bid
in Italy off to a flying start.
Ninety minutes later an
entire nation was in shock
after the unthinkable
happened -little Costa
Rica had won thanks to
Juan Cayasso beating a
blundering Scots defence
and lofting the ball over
the flapping Jim Leighton.
Faroe Islands 1 Scotland 1
1999 Toftir
Matt Elliott was sent
off for a blatant elbow as
Craig Brown's Euro 2000
qualification hopes
collapsed. Allan Johnston
gave Scotland the lead, but
the 10 men couldn't hold out
and Hans Frodi Hansen's
last.gasp header left
Brown in despair.
Faroe Islands 2 Scotland 2
2002 Toftir
The Faroes took an early two goal lead thanks to striker
John Petersen. Scotland struggled to scrape a draw thanks to a
deflected Paul Lambert strike and
a goal from Barry Ferguson late on.
But on reflection Scotland actually deserved to lose this game.
