Scotland 1 USA 1 There was a crowd of over 100,000 at Hampden the last time USA played an international football (soccer) match on Scottish soil. That was in 1952 - and Scotland won, as expected at the time, by a wide margin. Since 2000, however, when the two teams were close together in the international rankings in the low 20s, the US team has risen to 7th in the world and Scotland slumped to 88th, recovering only recently to 62nd. The match on Saturday was regarded as a "warm up" for the US in preparation for the finals of the World Cup next year - Scotland failed to qualify, yet again. So manager Walter Smith and the Scottish players will feel well satisfied with the 1-1 draw on Saturday. The US scored first, from a penalty early on, but the Scots battled on and were rewarded in the second half by an equaliser - which came out of the blue after a free kick was headed into the net by Webster from 15 yards out. Scotland did get the ball in the net a second time but it was ruled off-side. The US were without a number of their regular players, but then again, so were Scotland.

Scotland v USA Football International
A friendly international football (soccer) match between Scotland and USA has been arranged for 12 November. The match is being played at Hampden Stadium in Glasgow. While Scotland have failed - again - to qualify for the World Cup next year, the US team has qualified for the fifth consecutive time. The last time USA played on Scottish soil, Scotland defeated them 6-0. But that was in 1952. In 1998 the teams drew 0-0 in Washington. While Scotland has only recently reversed a slide down the international football rankings (moving from 88 in March to 62 in October), USA is currently 7th in the world.

Scotland will begin their preparations for the Euro 2008 campaign with a home friendly international against Switzerland on 1 March next year.

The qualifying draw for Euro 2008 will take place in Montreux on 27 January. Click here to view the teams

Meadows playing fields, Campbeltown:
The away trips just keep on coming for the East of Scotland Tartan Army and their Tennents Tartan Army Cup run. The veterans of the recent Milan trip can now add Campbeltown, to their list of Nairn and BonnyBridge, in there 1000 mile quest to bring the Cup back to Dundee.

In the Semi-final yesterday, they faced a Campbeltown team who knocked out the current holders Kirkcaldy in the previous round 6-1, so a visit to Campbeltown was not going to be easy. Especially since half the team went down to Campbeltown on Saturday. Typical Tartan Army preparation, none of your bed by nine stuff, there were Kilted EASTA members see straggling all over Campbeltown in the early hours of Sunday Morning. The fact that the KO was 10:30am, did not seem to bother them.

Despite looking like death warmed up, EASTA went for the jugular right away and totally dominated the first 15 mins and were rewarded with a Penalty when CTA defender handled a cross. EASTA Captain Gary Christie stepped up and fired in a low drive into the keepers bottom right corner. the lead was short lived when against the run of play, Campbeltown equalised through a mix-up in the EASTA defence leaving the CTA forward to stab ball home from close range. EASTA continued their pressure and had a series of corners, which eventually led to the smallest player on the park, Ali Scott bulleting in a header from a Del Clark corner kick. Tensions were starting to run high and EASTA coach Stainless 'lost it' with Campbeltown centre half Davie Patterson in an argument over a throw in, the player and the coach had to be separated by the ref and both received some harsh word of warning from the ref. At 2-1, play started to become disjointed and Half time couldn't come early enough as John Dunn tried to settle his team, although half time was early as the ref blew after on 33 mins in a really bizarre act terrible arithmetic by the referee. With both teams off the park, he had to call them back on after realising his mistake.

The 12 mins extra time in the first half were totally dominated by EASTA and Ali Scott broke the offside trap, drew the keeper before squaring the ball for your Gregor McMaster to tap the ball into the empty net to make it 3-1. Some great play on the left saw player/manager John Dunn burst clear and with the Campbeltown Keeper covering all the angles, Dunn rifled the ball through the keepers legs to give EASTA a half time lead of 4-1. 2nd Half, EASTA started to introduce some of the fringe players to the action as the hangovers from the night before really kicked in.

It was soon game over though as Ali Scott was gifted a goal with the help from the pitch, as the Campbeltown Keeper missed a backpass with the ball bobbling over his foot. 5-1 EASTA. EASTA's Ali Scott was denied a hattrick and £20 as the ref disallowed his goal from a Gregor McMaster cutback, much to the relief of both Campbeltown and EASTA's Tam Ferry who put up the £20 bonus. Chances fell to both sides and EASTA keeper THE CLAW was in excellent form, pulling off a string of says, it was end to end stuff and Campbeltown to their credit never gave up. EASTA sub, Waders picked up a clearance from a corner kick and unleashed a 35 yarder screamer which was heading to the top corner and the history books, before the CTA pulled of a spectacular fingertip save. 10 mins from the end there was a tiny glimmer of hope as they pulled it back to 5-2 but EASTA put the icing on the cake with a goal of great individual skill. Centre Half, James Dunn picked up the ball in his own box after defending a corner, outpaced 2 of the CTA players, running the length of the pitch, going past another two before coolly slotting the ball under the CTA keeper in 90th minute, what a run for the last minute of the game.

Special thanks to the Highland boys and Alan Dallas for their hospitality, food, drink, cheap chipper vouchers and a few goals.

We were almost like a real fitba team, having a team breaky at 10:30am in Blair Athol, except a real team wouldnae be tucking into a full cooked breaky before a big game.

Game kicked off a wee bit early after the expected huge crowd didnae turn up, EASTA were 1-0 after 6 mins when Gary Christie struck a great free kick from 25 yeards. No-one was more delighted than the Claw who had 5-10 mins in the first goal sweepie.

The lead only lasted a few mins with HTA getting an equaliser after a defensive mixup from EASTA.

EASTA made hard work of it and it took till the 22nd minute before co-manager Stotty fired one in after having hit the woodwork twice.

Claw's brother Gregor got the 3rd in 26 mins and EASTA made it too the break after a period of scrappy posession by both teams, and a disalowed goal from HTA.

EASTA made 3 changes at half time and right away, subby goalie Haigy and Leigh kingston got in a mixup and the indecision allowed the HTA forward to nip in and pass the ball into the empty net in 48 mins. (2-3)

This was the wakeup call the EASTA needed as the went on wave after wave of attack, with young Gregor McMaster firing the ball home from close range in 57 mins to make it 4-2 EASTA.

Late goals from Stotty and EASTA captain Gary Christie made it 6-2 and allowed the EASTA secret weapon, the Claw, to be unleashed upfront.

Within a minute Claw knocked the ball just past the post and Jimmy Bell did the same after beating 3 men.

Tennents Cup 2004 - EASTA v PTA - Sunday 21st March 2004
EASTA 5 - PTA 3

Easta were without a few regulars. Stotty and Paul Morrison were both injured, whereas Gary Christie had embarked upon a romantic weekend, and headed for Paris in the springtime.

The game started with Easta shooting downhill, and Ally Scott opened the scoring early on. This was followed by another and Easta were coasting. Ali Grieve showed showed his 'Paul McStay-like' potential, and scored two goals before half time. PTA had scored earlier in the half, and then had a header on the stroke of half time. HT 4-2

Easta, playing uphill, made heavy weather of the second half. PTA pulled it back to 4-3. And then late on Ally Scott got the clincher. Jimmy Bell was prominent in attack, and hit the woodwork twice. FT 5-3

Easta should have had the match sown up, but made hard work of it all. PTA were good and worthy opponents, and the match was played in good spirit throughout. I don't recall the ref having to speak with anyone, farless have to book anyone.

Team Lines Claw, Del, Stevie McMaster, Leigh, Glenn, Johnny Dunn, Ali G, Jamesie Dunn, Hagi, Ally Scott and Jimmy Bell. Subs, Pete Gall, Bruffer and Kev Candy. All contributed, and all played their part in a deserved victory.

Semi date is 2nd May. Opponents to be confirmed.
